Before you Make the Move: 10 Essential Things to Consider
By Lora Meisner, Thingamajob.com Staff Writer
If your local job market lacks opportunities, maybe you're thinking about moving to greener pastures. Thanks to the Internet, there's a vast amount of information about companies, cities/states, home prices, cost of living, etc. that is easy to acquire. Before you make that move here are a few things to consider:
1. What's the difference in the cost of living and what salary will you need in order to maintain your current standard of living?
2. What is the projected employment outlook for your profession and in the geographic area that you're considering for relocation?
3. What is the local culture like and does it offer what you're looking for? Each area of our country offers its own unique culture.
4. Does the city that you're considering offer a diverse employment environment or is it a one-company town? Since recessions and unemployment occur everywhere, the more diverse the employment-base, the better opportunity you'll have to stay employed.
5. If this move does not work out, do you have the resources to make another move or to return?
6. Will you have a job before you move? If not, do you have enough saved to cover living expenses while you're seeking employment?
7. Can you get a transfer to another with the company where you're presently employed?
8. Will your spouse/significant other be able to secure adequate employment?
9. Would you be better off staying in your present location, especially if you have friends and family for social support, and working in a less rewarding position rather than relocating?
10. "The grass is always greener on the other side." However, before you make a move thoroughly check out that other side.
